Teaching Private for English Teachers in Korea
Some ESL teachers with TESOL certificates from American TESOL Institution decide to go for private teaching jobs in Korea after the completion of the course. They are on a teach and travel project with ATI and find teaching privates to be more lucrative offer then entering into a signed contract with any of the schools in South Korea. For teaching privates, one needs not to sign any employment contract. But unfortunately, teaching privates is considered to be illegal for all those native English speakers with E-2 Visa in South Korea. South Korea is pretty strict about this issue.
If you are violating this rule then you will be charged the following penalties:
-
More than 1 million won fine
-
Exit order from Korea within 15 days
-
Imprisonment in case you are not paying the fine
-
Re entry to Korea is banned for the next five years
-
A report is send to the embassy of your native country
Teaching privates are legal for the teachers with F2-1 or F5 visas. Even after having these visas, you should check out whether your employer allows you to teach private outside the school premise or not. Otherwise, you will end up with a breach of contract.
