Contract Types for English Teachers in Korea
The job contract which an ESL teacher has to sign in Korea covers the following details:

The teaching hours

Workload: you will be asked to take a maximum of 100 hours class which is equal to 120 classes of 50 minutes each in a month.

Overtime is not compulsory. The teacher can refuse to work overtime or extra time on his or her due holidays.

The term of the contract: it is usually one year

The job description: the teachers are expected to teach conversational English language and to participate in English camps and other educational activities as he or she is asked to do by school authority.

Salary and overtime pay: four weeks of teaching is counted as one payment session. Overtime pay is also calculated and paid on monthly basis. Overtime pay covers the time a teacher spends on class preparation, translating, open house, sketching teaching material, meetings, baby sitting, camping, and interacting with parents etc. The school will also pay the traveling cost if the teacher is asked to travel to different work places.

Tax deductions: this also includes health insurance premium and residence tax.

Free furnished apartment is provided

Paid holidays: this will include all the national holidays, summer holidays, winter vacation and 5 sick days in a year.

Dress codes: casual neat and clean clothes are accepted

Medical insurance: from the first working day, the teacher is offered a coverage of his or her dental and medical insurance. One half of the insurance premium is paid by the school and the other half by the teacher.

Airfare: after the arrival of the teacher in Korea, the employer provides the cash equivalent of an economy class ticket from the closest airport of his original home to Korea. The return ticket is also provided on the last day of the contract.

Visa cost: the cost of visa is also provided by the school

Annual bonus: according to Korean Labor Law, the annual bonus is equivalent to one month’s salary. Annual bonus is paid on the last day of one year contract. Half a month’s salary is paid for 6 months contract.

Dismissal of contract: both the teacher and the employer have the right to dismiss the contract at any time of the year if either of the party is dissatisfied with the job scenario or disagree to the prescribed terms and conditions.

Legal implications: this contract is a legal agreement which is governed by the law of Republic of Korea. No amendment of this agreement can be done without the permission of the undersigned or consent of both the parties. Photostat copy of the agreement is considered to be as valid as the signed original.

Other details: the contract will have the date and place, school name, school owner’s name, signature of the school owner, teacher’s name and teacher’s signature.
